Stage Five of the Wānaka Lakefront Development Plan will improve safety and existing active travel connections on the lakefront between Wānaka's marina and yacht club.

New sections of the 2.5m shared pathway Te Ara Wānaka will be installed, running alongside the bank between Lakeside Road and the marina, before connecting with the Eely Point lakeside trail.

Given this location is widely used by vehicles, boats, and trailers throughout the year, the formalised pathway will help to keep people safe while maintaining the existing space for recreational lake users.

The project will also deliver three new parking spaces for those using the marina, while safeguarding the boat and trailer parking area nearby too.

Once complete, this latest addition to Te Ara Wānaka will help to separate vehicles and people moving through the area on foot, by bike, scooter or wheeled mobility device.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $1.5M.

What's the latest?

Thursday 11 July 2024:

The contract for these works has been awarded to Fulton Hogan.

Crews will be setting up on site from Friday 12 July, with work to begin on Monday 15 July.

Construction dates

Work on Stage Five of the Wānaka Lakefront Development Plan will begin on Monday 15 July 2024.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2024.

What to expect

Once work is underway, a temporary pedestrian detour will be required in future using the footpath on Lakeside Road, to help move people around the construction site safely. We'll provide more details on the detour closer to the time.

Controlled vehicle access will be maintained for marina, yacht club, and boat ramp users. However, priority will be given to emergency services.

Those launching boats during construction are recommended to use Eely Point, Waterfall Creek or Glendhu Bay to launch their vessels and avoid any potential delays.

Boats parked within the work site have been temporarily moved to Eely Point Reserve until work on Stage Five is complete.
