Giving written approval

Kia tuku whakaae ā-tuhi mō te tono whakaaetaka rawa taiao

Find out about what happens if you’re affected by a resource consent application and are asked to give written approval.

  • You're considered an 'affected party' to a resource consent if we decide a proposal will have an effect on your property (for example, by shading your house).

You may be asked by the applicant to provide your written approval as part of their application or be invited to have your say once the application has been submitted if the Council deems you to be an affected party.

    • You don't have to give written approval or provide a reason for not doing so.

    • If you agree to giving written approval, we can't take the effect on your property into account when we evaluate the resource consent application.

    • You can only give unconditional written approval. If there are certain parts of the proposal you're not happy with, talk to the applicant to see if you can reach a compromise.

    • If you're not sure whether to give your approval, we recommend you seek independent advice.

    • If you choose not to give your approval, you may have the opportunity to make a submission on the resource consent application if it's notified.

  • Download and complete Form 8A and give it to the applicant to submit with their resource consent application.

If the resource consent is relating to boundary activities use Form 8B:

You will also need to sign:

    • the resource consent application

    • each page of the plans included with the application.

  • You can withdraw your written consent at any time before the resource consent is granted. However, please note that if you withdraw your written consent after an application has been notified, you may not have the ability to lodge a submission on the application.

If you would like to withdraw your written consent, you should contact the processing planner. If you don’t know who is processing the application or don’t have their contact details, please contact the Duty Planner who will be able to direct you.
