Committees

The Council has four committees that oversee a specific area of the Council’s activities: Community Services, Infrastructure Services, Finance and Corporate Accountability, and Strategy.   

 

Membership of the committees comprises of the elected Councillors. The Council decides the membership of each committee, based on the recommendations of the Mayor. The Mayor is an ex-officio member of all committees.  There is also one member of the Wanaka Community Board on each committee.

 

Community Services Committee

The Community Services Committee governs the District’s many community facilities and services including parks and reserves, recreation and leisure facilities, libraries, trees, arts/culture, cemeteries and community events and festivals.

Committee members are: Cath Gilmour (Chairperson), Jude Battson (Deputy Chairperson), Russell Mawhinney, Lex Perkins and Simon Stamers-Smith 

Infrastructure Services Committee

The Infrastructure Services Committee governs the Council’s core infrastructure areas, including water, sewerage and stormwater networks, the roading network and road safety, solid waste and recycling, transportation planning, parking and public transport.

Committee members are: Lyal Cocks (Chairperson), Jude Battson, John Mann, Lex Perkins (Deputy Chairperson) and Trevor Tattersfield 

Strategy Committee

The Strategy Committee governs the Council’s policy and planning area.  It is responsible for general matters related to the Resource Management Act 1991 including the District Plan and Plan Changes and developing environmental, social and economic strategies to enhance community well-being.

Committee members are: Leigh Overton (Chairperson), Lyal Cocks, Mel Gazzard (Deputy Chairperson), Cath Gilmour and Simon Stamers-Smith

Finance and Corporate Accountability

The Finance and Corporate Accountability Committee oversees the financial and corporate performance of the Council and its Council controlled organisations (Lakes Environmental, Lake Leisure, Queenstown Airport Corporation).  It is also responsible for the Council’s holiday parks and other property investments.

Committee members are: John Mann (Chairperson), Mel Gazzard,  Russell Mawhinney (Deputy Chairperson), Leigh Overton and Trevor Tattersfield

Wanaka Community Board

The Wanaka Community is not a committee of Council but a separate unincorporated body established under section 49 of the Local Government Act 2002.  The role of the Wanaka Community Board is to represent and act as an advocate for the Wanaka community.  The Council has given extensive delegation to the Wanaka Community Board to make decisions on many of the facilities and services located within the Wanaka Ward.

Community Board appointed members are: Lyal Cocks (Chairperson), Jude Battson and Leigh Overton

Community Board elected members are: Bryan Lloyd (Deputy Chairperson) , Dick Kane, Ken Copeland and Mike O'Connor
